DR. JOSHUA BARHAM
Sofja Kovalevskaja Group Leader
Joshua Philip Barham was born in 1991 in Watford (Hertfordshire, near London), United Kingdom. In 2013, he received his MSci. in Chemistry from University College London. During his Master Thesis, he developed an intramolecular conjugate addition nitro-Mannich reaction under the supervision of Prof. James (Jim) C. Anderson .
He joined the GlaxoSmithKline/University of Strathclyde Collaborative Ph.D programme for his doctoral studies, under the supervision of Prof. John A. Murphy (Strathclyde) and Dr. Matthew P. John (GSK). Based at GSK, he explored innovative methods for sustainable pharmaceutical manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), including photoredox catalysis and flow chemistry, within Global API Chemistry. During his secondment in the Murphy group at the University of Strathclyde, he investigated the mechanisms of transition metal-free coupling reactions of haloarenes with arenes.
After completing his Ph.D. in Feb. 2017, he went to the University of Shizuoka, Japan to join the group of Prof. Yoshitaka Hamashima for postdoctoral studies. There he investigated microwave flow chemistry supporting flow reactor manufacturer SAIDA FDS Inc. In 2018, he continued microwave flow chemistry research at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Tsukuba, within the group of Prof. Yasuo Norikane .
Since Dec. 2019, Joshua P. Barham leads an independent research group at the University of Regensburg, investigating photo-, electro-, photoelectro- and flow chemistry in organic synthesis.
