Is the photoredox catalyst you add to the reaction really the active catalyst..?
We report how dicyanoacridones are precatalysts to record-breaking closed-shell acridinium super-photooxidants (*E ~3V) that oxidize even ArCl and ArF in electro-recycled photoredox catalytic reactions!
The potent, ns-lived diCNAcridiniums are easily made in high yield authentically, as a simple alternative to contraversial open-shell radical ion photocatalysts with ultrashort lifetimes!
Congrats to the whole team, especially Jonas and Sonia. A delightful collaboration with the Slanina group who helped unravel the mechanism!
